Amita Suman: Doctor Who (BBC)

Amita stars as major guest lead Umbreen in the new season of Doctor Who.

The character stars in episode ‘Demons of the Punjab‘ revealed as Yaz’s grandmother. The Doctor and her friends arrive in the Punjab, India, in 1947, as the country is being torn apart; while Yaz attempts to discover her grandmother’s hidden history, the Doctor discovers demons haunting the land.

Umbreen had been previously mentioned by Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall in an interview with the Radio Times as one of his most anticipated characters of the new series.

Overview

Amita was born in Nepal and moved to the UK at aged 7. She trained at ALRA, graduating in 2018. Since graduating she has worked with companies such as the BBC and Channel 4. Most recently she worked with The CW Network and Arrowstorm Entertainment on the second season of the fantasy-adventure series, The Outpost, playing series regular Naya. She plays Umbreen in Season 11 of Doctor Who and was mentioned by Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall in an interview with the Radio Times as "one of his most anticipated characters of the new series.” Other screen roles include; Nina in Casualty (BBC) and Sameera in series 2 of popular Channel 4 drama Ackley Bridge.
