Gary Shelford plays Agamemnon, Electra and Apollo in Blanche McIntyre’s The Oresteia for HOME theatre in Manchester.
Terrible secrets are handed down through the generations in a bloody chain of murder and revenge. The Oresteia, the first great work of theatre written two and a half thousand years ago, is as gripping and relevant as ever. Where is justice in a landscape of blood?
Taking the translation by one of the great poets of the twentieth century, Ted Hughes, this swift-moving, newly cut version radically condenses Aeschylus’ epic trilogy into one play.
HOME welcomes director Blanche McIntyre (Best Director TMA 2013 UK Theatre Awards; Critics’ Circle Most Promising Newcomer Award), with an ensemble of actors playing multiple roles that cross generations and genders.
Gary Shelford's theatre work includes a World Tour of Henry V and The Winter's Tale for Propeller Theatre Company, The Stock Da'Wa at the Hampstead Theatre, Angry Young Man at Trafalgar Studios, Tin Horizon at Theatre 503, The UK Premiere of The Internationalist at The Gate Theatre, No Man's Land for Harold Pinter at The National and his award winning one man play Animal Farm.
His film work includes A Portrait of London for Mike Figgis, Bridget Jones:The Edge of Reason and Slapper for Chewitel Ejiofor. His Television includes Luther, Silent Witness, and The Quartermass Experiment for the BBC.
Gary toured the world for a second time with Propeller Theatre Company in productions, The Taming of the Shrew and Twelfth Night ending at the Hampstead Theatre, London.
